The educational program of christening according to the Old Lithuanian Folk Traditions:

Christening — the basis of the whole Christian life, the beginning of the life together with Jesus Christ.
A baby who gets the sacrament of baptism becomes the member of the Christian community. The rituals while preparing the baby for the christening, seeing him/her of together with the godparents to the church and welcoming them back is an important part of the folk traditions, during which the baby is introduced into the family, neighbour and kinsfolk environment. So, we invite you to open together the most beautiful chest of christening rituals and traditions. The introduction to the cultural treasures will attract everyone, who cares about his/her own nation roots and is curious to have a look at the experience dowry accumulated during the centuries by our ancestors.

1. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: “Seeing off to the church“

During this activity:
1. We will introduce you to the main Lithuanian folk christening rituals and traditions;
2. We will reveal you the main christening day beliefs, predictions and guesses;
3. We will perform the demonstrative seeing off to the church rituals;
4. We will entertain you with the traditional seeing off dishes (cottage cheese, honey, homemade kvass, homemade bread, sausage and Lithuanian skilandis (a pig’s stomach stuffed with salted, garlic-flavoured minced meat and bacon);
5. We will give presents to the baptised child.
Duration of the program – 1 hour.

2. EDUCATION PROGRAM: “Welcoming from the church“

During this activity:
1.We will introduce you to the main Lithuanian folk christening rituals and traditions;
2. We will welcome and introduce solemnly the baptized child to the community members;
3. We will perform the demonstration of the child‘s coming back home and his/her welcoming rituals;
4. We will give presents and we will make the best wishes;
5. We will entertain you with the traditional christening dish “Grandma‘s mash”.
